The annotation and human figures are missing. Drawing shows how circulation works through different levels of different programmes, starting from the District Line Station directly connecting via Lifts, the building being an extension of the city without having a border, a boundary.

I'm planning to add three very thin lines ending with arrows, one showing the connection from Fenchurch Street and the Tower Bridge walk, the other showing the route from DLR Station towards Monument Station, the last one showing the connection at the terrace floor between the three cores.

Street as a Corridor

Drawing showing how the existing infrastructure of the city meets with the building at varying levels. An existing walkway under the road meets with the floor of one urban room, Fenchurch Street continues into the hotel, passing by the main reception. Walking from the Tower Gateway DLR station, the urban room cantilevers above the walkway. At the same time, walking from the Fenchurch Street through the building, climbing up the stairs, one person finds himself in the second quiet side of the urban room seeing the sky and the balcony by the edge / which is used as the restaurant of the hotel in the evening.

Darker shading shows the stairs and corridors attached to the hotel rooms on the edge of this quiet side of the urban room.

The coffee room on the edge of the urban room, where you can stay and work for hours - almost like a public living room - is represented really sketchy right now. It will be fixed.

I will have one small London Bus and London Underground icon on where exactly the building meets with them.

Bridge as a Destination

The section is not 100% finished, I am planning to show the take away and - public living room = coffee space a little more in detail. The westbound reception is also missing its desk and seatings. One last thing is the retail space next to the walkway missing right now, which is the new space for the existing souvenir shop on the site. You can see the three hotel rooms on the right side of the drawing facing the Roman Wall direction.

London Underground logo is also missing on the train - I think it's an important detail to highlight the existance of a station under the building. One more thing is the little food kiosk appearing right on the walkway on the leg of the building: two people are queuing in front of it. I'm missing some details there too.

Cut Line For Section

Trying to figure out where to place the diagram that illustrates where the cut line for this section should go. Bottom right? Seperate page? Draw a line at the bottom and put it below? Need Some Help

Here is the plan section with material, inhabitation, and trees. I'm having a problem trying to figure out how to section it onto paper. So my question is how should i go about framing it for the page, and is there anything I'm missing or anything that should be changed. Thanks, zach. Through laser burn, I made some part.

Even though I used weak laser power, I think that laser burn on the surface is little bit dark.

I am planning to show 3 types of rooms in detail as a pop-up from this axo on the same drawing.

What happens around the station, lifts, stairs and escalator will be more in detail.

Some furnitures will be shown at certain shared spaces.

The drawing will be useful for presenting which programme goes where and how you access it.

I will only use colors for two urban room spaces. one as red and the other one as green.

Axonometric / Facade Studies

The ground level is finally on a 1:200 axonometric drawing.

The perforated concrete facade is right now represented in maximum density. It will be more varying when it comes to hotel rooms.
The rooms will sometimes have narrow but wider, sometimes larger windows. Some of the windows will be translucent.
Although it looks like a very homogenous facade, ideally it will be a patchwork of materials by having different qualities of materials (transparent, translucent, mesh, open) in every facade cell. At night this would create an interesting pattern of lit rooms.

Borromini- for Artemis & Aine

Borromini used a specific hierarchy of served vs. servant spaces. Niches in plan are joined by domes and coffers in ceilings. Think about ways to address thickness, concealment, apertures, residual spaces and how these conditions help to describe the organisation of spaces within your hotels. Look at the thicknesses + dashed lines- very simple....

Public Route

This is a quick animation i didn't spend any time on, it's just produced at the background while I'm working on the structural skin and the axo!

It's created by just selecting the points for the camera to cross over,

I got an interesting representation of the walk approaching from the Fenchurch Street Station, entering from the hotel entrance of the building then walking by the hidden walkway towards the hotel room and crossing the entrance to the cafe, returning back to the public square. Then the walk continues entering the urban room, checking the London Underground Station, looking at the bus stop from the station and leaving towards the Tower Bridge; looking back, waiting for like 12 hours at the same spot watching the sunlight on the building ! :)

The facade is still not as dense as it should be for it to be built in concrete instead of steel. Also for privacy, a denser facade will be more useful.

On the drawing, I tried to put some texture on the ground, roof and moat. Also, I made some pathway on the moat. But I think that I need to edit more. Actually, I don't know now.

Accumulating Space

Our cities and buildings are nothing but an accumulation of different elements built or brought in different times in the past.

The edge of River Thames accomodates the London Eye next to the Parliament, the Louvre Museum has the glass pyramid in its courtyard and Eiffel Tower is the icon of Paris, although the city is famous for having Haussmannian buildings.

The accumulation is unexpected, it can not be foreseen by one single designer. It can be defined by the user of its edge or can even be expanded by another architect's contribution.

In order to let accumulation happen the presence of an edge is crucial. Instead of the tradition of the architect trying to control everything and drawing arrows of circulation, dictating the use of the spaces very clearly, the role of the architect can be dealing with this edge.

On the scale of a house, it is never used the way the architect projects his vision by collages or selects the post-construction photos in order to explain the project in a publication. What happens in the post-construction phase seems to be not in the interest of the architect. Unfortunately great things happen in terrible buildings and terrible things happen in great buildings most of the time.

In an architecture magazine or architect’s publication; we never see a shirt thrown on the chair, a glass left on the table, while the whole experience of architecture is very much affected by these.

The architect’s role must be influencing the accumulation in both urban and house scale.

Designer has to think about the connections with the adjacent spaces, the amount of light, materials, temperature and comfort of the space. He should not give up his idea of the use of the space but yet, he should respect the decissions of the users themselves. Most of the failing architectural products in the history are the dictating attempts.

The tension of trying to find a balance; the game between the designer’s idea against the user’s desire of using the space is one of the most interesting challenges of the profession.

This tension forms the accumulation on the edge that is defined by the architect. Although the result, the accumulation can not be pictured by the architect, it is not unpredictable. A lot of contemporary designs show no respect to the knowledge and input of its user. The discoveries of the new architecture can be about widening the knowledge of how space is occupied at which conditions almost accidentally, and let great things happen in great buildings too.

Structural System / Facade

After the final tutorial with Scobie Alvis, I thought the problem of getting light into the rooms can be solved with a perforated skin. The pattern is informed by the previous opennings I have decided and the structural analysis done in SAP software.

The structural system of the building works similar to the Phaeno Center of Zaha Hadid. The slabs span between the two sides of the structural skin.Having the skin run through the middle of the floor clearly blocks the view of a 1.70 person. I would like to have a some of these opennings translucent just like the hotel rooms we've experienced in Japan; when the window becomes only a element of the building to let the daylight in, not act as an opening to view through.
The facade sinks into the building in this one, and the floors attached to the skin are not independent from this skin, the skin becomes "the edge" as it gets a volume through inner surface.
Rooms are sometimes hanging from this skin and at some point this skin extrudes to become the lift...

Another sequence showing the waffle slab structure for the hotel. By using interior walls as structural walls, I'm trying to get a column free building. While 3 cores hold this waffle slab high, lower skin of the building will help to distribute the load until the ground level.

Massaged Model

Proposal drawings

This is study of programs in hotel.

I am trying to fit in the programs according to the type, i.e. more public programs will be place where it is more public accessibeand more private programs are distanced from public spaces.

To distance the public, private programs it seems vertical arrangement is more promising to seperate the programs.

The plan varies in differet heights from the ground.

There are 3 main plans for the hotel,

Lower Ground Level, Ground Level, Upper Level.

These are series of sections, sections every 5 metres from west to east of the site, showing how void, path, volumes transforms from west to east.

Sejima Okurayama project for Joe

These are some images of Sejima's Okuruyama project recently completed- to inspire. Notice that the ground is sometimes continuous and the cavities create outdoor 'rooms' and overlapped blocks that have no front or back but a more complex layered morphology. Your block gives specific constraints about blank flank walls. Where do you get your light from? Which areas overlap and where?

It is the design for a competition for a museum in Metz by FOA.

Look at the pattern of opening in the facade.

I do not know what they are doing to the interior in this project but the camera view like cones may work well for your project.

The system of facade may be framing specific views and establishing specific relationships with the monuments surraunding your hotel.

This is a structural study only for the envelope of the building done in SAP10, it's possible to see which parts of the building is weak weighting the Dead Load on this animation.

Unfolded facade is a useful template to show the weak points of the geometry - as an object. The real structure of the building will not be depending on a structural facade since the building is not that large.
The famous right angled 3x4x5 triangle was formed by chance when I was looking for three continous vertical spaces which can accomodate the cores of the building. The center of gravity would not be in the middle of the building if all of the cores were same sized so I increased the size of the southern core (x) and gradually decreased the dimensions towards north (y and z) which moved the center of gravity for this triangle towards the center of the building.

From this drawing, you can see how these three cores are cutting through the building at different levels.

While preparing the presentation it was helpful editing the whole year's work only on four A1 sheets.

Unfortunetely the new sectional drawing was not very successful showing the 30m wide space as if it was like 2-3m wide. The images turned out to be very small on A1 too since it was the first time for me to use A1 size sheet for presentation. Also my obsession with the black and white presentation since the January Progress Review seems to start to really bore people too. Oh by the way these were A1 full colour prints, prepared in black and white!

Hi Aine,

I have posted the two projects I was talking about last week.
It is not so much about the effect of the facades as quality and effect of your fragment are good.
What I will try and test in the jury is the relation between the facade and the internal organisation of the building.
I.e. whether addressing the stacking of the internal volumes in relation to a more curvilinear facade as in Francois Roche project in Bangkok, or whether it should go beyond that.

Fragment Test 2

Here is my second model experiment for the fragment project. The scale is at 1:3 of the final model I'll be making. The fragment is of the entering and exiting points into the building and the routes that would be taken from the ground floor to the first floor. The final model with have varied openings and closing to obscure and frame views within and out of the building. (This is not shown due to folded paper modeling). This will be done buy laser cutting airply into strips and notching it together in a systematic way. Let me know what you think, as I'm starting to model the final tonight in order to get a spot on the always busy lasercutting machine. Thanks, zach.

Fragment Study / The Ramps

In 1:250 scale this quick fragment model explains the entrance to the public room when it is approached from the Fenchurch Street Station, Trinity Square direction.

While "the Balcony" level is allowing the user to wonder around, the lower walkway is letting a faster flow of people (business and local people) to walk towards their destination in an easier way.

The inbetween levels could be occupied by a gallery and a coffee shop.

By making people cross through the building (magenta coloured path) the user can be attracted to the food / supermarket level on the way home or work just like the way it happens in Tokyu Department Store.

The floorplates are there just to give you an idea about the scale, each floor is 3m distanced from each other and this is a diagram representing the performance of the building. The weird angles that would not let people walk is a temporary condition that should be ignored when these diagrams are read.

From the north, the building would frame the Tower of London, this frame could accommodate a lobby for the hotel and a transparent passage entrance towards the Tower Bridge and Tower of London.
So far I did my best to avoid using colors but to describe the layers of programmes I've been thinking to place in the building, I colour coded the section slices for you.

The light blue is the hotel, purple would be the leisure, restaurants and bars with a view of Tower Bridge and River Thames. Yellow is a gallery space and other public programmes like a food market, coffee place, newspaper kiosk and a souvenir shop. The gray planes are the varying ground levels around the building.

The London Underground (District Line) runs through the lower compartment of the building. Allowing shortcut exits towards the Tower Bridge and shorter platform crossing advantage in comparison to the existing station.

It brings confusion of realising the definition of the space, i.e. whether it is interior, exterior, void or solid etc.

Idea is to develop the project with this study of conceoptional fragment model

Obviously when it is applied to the site it will be less repeatable in size and shape.

Design Strategy / Formation

The existing elements on the site that requires a new way of organization are the walkway towards the Fenchurch Street Station, the London Underground exits and the programme that needs to place on the site: Hotel.
In order to appreciate the 3D nature of the site, the building does not respond to the urban tide in a linear way, the idea is to have three inhabitable tubes of space merging onto each other to create one urban element which could be potentially used as an urban corridore.
Where the building becomes the street, and the city flows through the building.

The lessons gathered from the Tokyu Department Store, Kyoto and Love Hotels seems to all be waiting for their moment to take place in such strategy. The technique of creation of a void from first term and the accumulation of varying amount of mass around it already gives a clue about how this building could be designed. Using the fade effect on the facade, this diagramatic model describes potential thickness of the inhabitable walls filled with programme.
The edge can dissapear and with the cutting angle exaggeration just like how it was in the study models I've made in the beggining of the year. This kind of edge would provide a viewing deck for the tourists to take photos, enjoy the Tower Bridge and panaromic London view.

The walkway is a very important arterier for the city which lets the pedastrians cross the Tower Bridge to the southern side of Thames without being obstructed by the traffic. It's also used by the tourists to access Tower of London from the Tower Hill London Underground Station.

This animation could explain the way the I have imagined so far how this project strategy can work within this formation.

The mesh shows potentially where the hotel rooms could be located, and the X marks show the direction of three locations for a vertical connection. The entrances from the north could be from a door and suddenly the visitor could find himself in the public space.

Since it rains quite often in London, this kind of semi-open spaces could really work.
