Plaster Pouring / Process

This Friday we will be joined by Graham Bizley. Graham is an Architect in practice in London as one half of PrewettBizley. He is best known for his weekly contributions to bd (Building Design), producing detailed cutaway drawings of buildings reviewed by the magazine. So popular are the drawings that he has made a book of them, called Architecture in Detail. He should be able to give you some advice about your individual approaches and the construction of specific values and qualities within drawing.

Measuring Tool

The complex surfaces and in-between spaces within the concrete and lead were measured by using this handmade measuring tool. Screws, positioned at pre-determined grids will be the guiding depth measurer, and the flat top surface of the concrete will be the reference datum for measuring. Measurement can be taken from various angles, and will create variety of readings for accuracy. These measurements will then be plotted and drawn.

Perforated cubes- for Carrie

Here are some drawn examples looking at specific holes inside cubes represented with different techniques. Although they are a little diagrammatic, the scale of your drawing should allow much more detail at a larger scale- but still allow you to be graphically communicative

Study of different perforations.
The performation brings confusion in relising the quality of the material.













Study of different size of void in the cube.
The size of the holes defines the volume of the void in the cube.
Depend on the size of the void in the cubes its tranparancy can be controlled.

Mould Cutting / Technique

Just a few pictures of my models from the stone brief...

Scissors-Drawing 1

This first drawing stipulates my model's vertically-cut sections and is generated from detailed articulations of graphical response between the surface terrain and speculated inner dimensions.

Rock / Product

This plaster model is casted inside a foam mould. After the settlement of the plaster, with the aid of aceton I melted the mould and got this very thin shell wih another layer of coloured plaster inside.
The light conditions and the material qualities differ a lot between the outer and the inner shell of the plaster model.



The contrast of the two surfaces differ very apparently. while the inner shell is very smooth and reacting to the light in a very different way, the outer layer is because of its previous attachment to the foam mould, feels more rough.

An accident happened during the making of this plaster model which also lead me to have a very interesting result. One weak corner of the foam mould broke with the pressure of the water and started floating on the bottom corner of the box that I'm doing the casting in.
This accident caused the outer layer to spread into the supposively inner shell. (the image on the right)

One of the ideas I had was to have the cuts corresponding just like a puzzle forming a bigger object.

This will be a part of photo + drawing page describing the development of the technique in order to get the "rock" mould to shape the plaster when it runs through.

I was interested in the spaces created by cross cutting and single angled colliding cuts.

Concrete and Lead

For this time the lead formwork is being used over and over by leaving some parts of it being assimilated with the concrete cast. Different forms of concrete chunks stick to each other, together with the lead sheet, creating small voids and cavities between them.
