Scissors / Levels

Surface Mapping





Measurements taken from the surface of the lead and concrete by using the measuring device were plotted against grids that were shifted at every 10mm intervals. These drawings are showing the construction sequence of the lead formwork and the concrete cast in detail.

This is also featured in Visual Explanations (Tufte) where colour gradation is used to indicate depth. Also a sea level datum is represented using colour differentiation. You could also introduce a datum to your own mappings, indicating a particular feature or threshold. Note also the grey lines- shipping channels, and the coloured contours- so as to emphasize the whole land mass- and differentiate from the sea. Your mapping could also have similar analytical + representative features

Measuring Tool




The complex surfaces and in-between spaces within the concrete and lead were measured by using this handmade measuring tool. Screws, positioned at pre-determined grids will be the guiding depth measurer, and the flat top surface of the concrete will be the reference datum for measuring. Measurement can be taken from various angles, and will create variety of readings for accuracy. These measurements will then be plotted and drawn.

Refer to the book for the description but what makes this interesting is the level of line variation depicting different types of train, also differing connections/ networks. Merits a closer look.......

Here are some drawn examples looking at specific holes inside cubes represented with different techniques. Although they are a little diagrammatic, the scale of your drawing should allow much more detail at a larger scale- but still allow you to be graphically communicative

The performation brings confusion in relising the quality of the material.














Study of different size of void in the cube.
The size of the holes defines the volume of the void in the cube.
Depend on the size of the void in the cubes its tranparancy can be controlled.

Scissors-Drawing 1



This first drawing stipulates my model's vertically-cut sections and is generated from detailed articulations of graphical response between the surface terrain and speculated inner dimensions.
