Representing urban changes

These are some examples of urban change mapped by David Bellasi, UEL unit E 2004-5. These studies and techniques may be useful for Aine and Artemis especially- to show the layers of change. These were taken from a 61 page group site research document the unit produced for a site in Old Street.

Urban Study Model

This massing model will be used to study conditions of the site, expanding thoughts from the urban strategies diagrams and to explore impacts and influences of the future intervention to the site and its surrounding.

Diagrammatic codes and materials will be inserted onto the model for these studies. I will upload the study progress images soon.

Spatial Relationship Draft

Now that i am still working on plans on how the programmes are to be spread around site; i would just post a quick spatial diagram to outline which spaces are to be linked with each other, this is then i can make decisions based on the research done on urban strategy earlier.

*Notice the above like 'Pink'- these are individual spaces which does not share with others; The long verticle bridge means that these different premises will share certain space, maybe more thoughts could be put into thinking how to clarify this identity that are meant to be segregated yet existing together, maybe though materials, signs, borders? Not sure either..

Now i think i am spending alot of time refining very small details, which isn't a very productive way of working. So i hope to come back to refine these diagrams later (For example i have not even think of carpark spaces); but to keep myself going, i hope my next drawing will be a clear outline of my programmes on site! =)

Urban Strategies

These studies are trying to exploit the potential and opportunities found around the site. Important elements to be manipulated are like extensions of the public realm from human's movement and activities around the site, slipping of the site with historical elements and circulation programmes, connecting the proposed hotel with any possible potentials with the existing surrounding hotels (programmes, infrastructure, etc.), and the issues of framing views.

These issues are extensions from my previous mapping as well as my interest in previous projects (i.e. unfolding the cube, views and spaces that are concealed and revealed, etc.) that I hope would help in generating ideas for the design development.

Urban Strategy / Introduction

The Urban Tide

We are interested in a small change which will effect the flow of people and will help the use of the space around the station more efficently when we locate the hotel programme on the site.

The strategy will respond to the different hours of the day by allowing and encouraging the shift of uses. The density, user types and speed of flow change during the day just like the tide changes on River Thames.

We are aiming to connect the routes for Tower Bridge, Tower of London, Fenchurch Street Station and Tower Gateway DLR Station by focusing around the Tower Hill Tube exit, where we believe is the most strategically important point on the site.

In order to connect the southern side of the street with the north, instead of physically building horizontal bridge and changing everything, as if this was a dumb 2 dimensional part of any city, we're trying to highlight the importance and potential of a vertical bridging on a very 3 dimensional organisation.

We are producing replacable configurations of different options using our 1:1000 site model base until the next tutorial.

Hotel Design Strategies

From the previous mapping studies, which characterized walking activities as an important spatial and physical repertoire of the site, I developed series of sketches to help in the understanding of the site, within the idea of walking and connections.

My emphasis is on the idea of the site as a town square, which civic engagement is a priority. My massing design strategies are explained through the options and keywords in the sketches. Hopefully these studies would help in my programmatic and schematic diagram ideas. 

Conversations- for Zach

Zach- these are some diagrams of blogging conversations online. I know that they are fairly abstract but are there ways in which you could plot a conversation whilst people are walking and show the interaction and crossover on your map of Tower Hill? You could plot the real conversations on the map also...

Journey Mapping

This mapping study is trying to achieve a more specific subject matter, which is walking patterns that suggest types of activities around the site. This study also try to explore the permeable streetscapes that expose the myriads of the ordinary and sees opportunities for spaces to be entered unintentionally or intentionally, maneuvering and exploring the spatial and physical repertoire of the site.   

Okay......this is wierd but it's not putting all the info on the map. It's missing the text in the key at the bottom, as well the colours are all off, aaaaahhhhh so yah. I was looking for some feedback on what i could add to this, it feels like its missing something, possible some more text besides the text you can't see, highlighting the arrival and departure points more....sorry this is post isn't complete....i can't seem to figure out why the conversion from pdf to jpg isn't working. thanks zach.

These mapping drawings describe important elements found along the journey, and are described through layers of categories; land use, lot boundaries and functions, built forms and voids. I try to focus on these categories only and will add on other important notations from my research. Hope these drawings are okay.

This is a schematic of Fushimi Inari. You can use this alongside the Google map to orientate yourself. I noticed that contours are also on the google map so modelling of the topography is possible. Hope this helps

Practical use of spaces around the SITE

- Practical use of spaces around the Site visualized as a three-dimentional interpolation.

Through tracing tourist path and londoner path, I found out some areas which are used by many people. In addition, dead space was located around the site.

But I am still looking for how to make a connection between tracing of path and three-dimentional visualization.

Sketch Ideas for Mapping 2

This drawing is a development from my sketch, that is to help in the understanding of the journey and the site in terms of layers of the area. The 'City Floor' layer is where the site boundaries and zonings are to be shown. The plots of areas in this layer will be rendered and color coded according to each zoning programs (i.e. commercial, leisure, infrastructure, open space, etc.).

The second exploded layer, the 'City Mass' is where the urban form is shown. This layer is drawn to help in the understanding of the city built forms, connections, height, width, volumes and taxonomy of building typologies found around the area. All significant and important building will be labeled for more information. The scale and density of the architectural form will help in the understanding of the context.

The top most layer is to show series of voids found around the journey area. These voids will be color coded to tell what they function as (i.e. services, courtyards, open plaza, public park, entrance to buildings, etc.). I think the study on the 'City Voids' would be an interesting research because of the potential of the voids as design strategies (i.e. programmatically, environmentally, views, connection with the city, human interaction, etc.). I will also draw connection lines between voids that are physically connected to show connection between each parcels of building blocks/ zones. Maybe this study will provide a link between architectural spaces and urban social dynamics.

Public Space and Journey

The idea is to define the public space, semi public space and private space along with showing the where the public road signs are then the road signs and guides naturally becomes a reference in forming a jouney.

This journey does not exist physically but does exist mentally so I thought that the connection that it has to my previous works.

The map above only shows lower part of the river but the whole site will be studies in same method.

Next Tuesday, Lefkos Kyriacou will come to school after tutorials to discuss some maps he is making as part of the research undertaken by the Conflict in Cities Programme at Cambridge University.

He will discuss some issues about map making, gathering information, graphical communication etc.

Sketch Ideas for Mapping 1

My sketch idea for the mapping of the journey would be series of drawings, each of them are fragmented from the sites of the journey. This sketch, for instance, is a fragment of one site (near Boundary Post) that is located at the beginning of my journey. Each drawings will show layers of information showed in axonometric. I hope this strategy of mapping would help to accentuate the important information that made up the whole area (i.e. site boundary, building volumes, voids, separations and openings, etc.). The series of drawings would be a selection of sites that have important remarks to the surrounding context and would be drawn in a sequence, as if they were pieces of puzzles that can be assembled together to form a map.

Tokyo Love Hotel

I'm still working on this drawing but would like to see what everyone thinks before i possibly go to far with it or not far enough. The main aspects i'm looking to represent are the layers of hidding that are incorporated into the layout (i.e. concrete walls, trees and hedges(not drawn yet), and the overall complicated path. The issue's I'm having with it is: should it be labeled or color coded with a info. bar? Is the angle good or should i change it? If you see anything that seems out of place or have any suggestions please let know. I drew it in Rhino so it can be modified. Thanks zach.

Mapping and notation- Former Students' Research

I am posting some examples of previous work to give you a flavour of what we might expect from the current mapping project and the conclusion of the Japan work. Maps and unfolded elevational drawings were constructed alongside coded models to reveal latent patterns and qualities . More to follow.....

This mapping by Hitoshi Yamamura distinguished between three different user groups by describing each through a typical route scenario



These routes were then reconstructed as a physical 3d model to show overlaps, widths and topographical characteristics



This mapping by Liz Betterton shows a series of buildings along the Omotesanto strip and also recods the spaces in between.



This unfolded elevation drawing by Bo Tang classified each type of signage through notation (line type, colour code to differentiate neon, graphics, sound
etc.)


These were then reconstructed through a series of coded neon models to reveal the latent patterns regarding visibility, access and property ownerships
