Hotel Design Strategies

From the previous mapping studies, which characterized walking activities as an important spatial and physical repertoire of the site, I developed series of sketches to help in the understanding of the site, within the idea of walking and connections.

My emphasis is on the idea of the site as a town square, which civic engagement is a priority. My massing design strategies are explained through the options and keywords in the sketches. Hopefully these studies would help in my programmatic and schematic diagram ideas.

Try to think about the strategies without formulating a physical proposal for the time being. Think about the effects- what you would like to change, manipulate, encourage, divert, connect etc. Also reflect on possible ambitions- such as an extension or manipulation of the public realm in relation to the hotel. If it seems difficult, think about the site and its movements over time, instead of its physical space, to consider the opportunities without committing to a physical proposal just yet.

Hi Afiz. The drawings look good as always. However, what I think will be good is if you can construct a critical attitude to the site.
Why is the site an opportunity for a public square? is it because of the pedestrian flow of people and the potential of diverting some onto the square.
Also remember that a square, conventionally, is a public space with buildings around. You will struggle to achieve that on the site and this may lead to a new type of public space. May be it needs to be three times as tall as space to become a public space.
I like the idea of the public penetrating or stationing under the building. You can make reference to the Gyre building in Tokyo you studied as that had a particular relation to the public street.
However I think it is about defining why the site lends itself to this opportunity.
